Capturing the Soul of Látky: A Photography Workshop in Rural Slovakia

In the peaceful village of Látky, a group of young people gathered for a photography workshop with a common desire — to learn more about visual storytelling and explore how photography can capture everyday life and identity within a community.

The session began with an introduction to the Photovoice method — a participatory approach that encourages individuals to document their environment and express their perspectives through photography. More than just taking pictures, Photovoice invites reflection, interpretation, and connection with the people and places around us.

Afterward, participants were introduced to key photography concepts such as composition, lighting, focus, depth of field, and how to shoot using manual mode. They also received hands-on training on how to operate the camera equipment and adjust settings to achieve creative control.

With cameras in hand, participants set out to explore Látky’s streets, gardens, and gathering spaces, guided by the soft light of a cloudy day that gave the village a calm, almost cinematic atmosphere. The eastern vibe of the setting — quiet, reflective, and slightly melancholic — added depth to their photographic journey. Each step was a chance to observe, connect, and frame the world around them with intention.

At the end of the photoshoot, the group reunited for a presentation session, where participants shared their selected photos using a projector. It was a space for open reflection — discussing their choices, the stories behind the images, and the different ways each person saw and interpreted the same environment.
