Our Hike Smart project took us to High Tatras in Slovakia for a Hiking Safety training from 26th to 30th August, 2024. 20 hiking instructors from Slovakia, Czechia, Portugal and Hungary participated in the 5-day-long intensive training. We shared good practices and learned from each other to increase our competences in organizing hiking and ensuring safety.

On the first day, the route was physically demanding designed to push participants beyond their comfort zone where they could begin to develop new skills and competences. The first challenge was an 18 km hike which included the iconic peek of Kriváň (2495 m). Multiple surveys among nature lovers have ranked it as the country’s most beautiful peak; it is the hikers’ favourite mountain in the western part of the High Tatras.

On the second day, we organized a hiking safety training which focused on equipping participants with essential knowledge and practical skills for safe and enjoyable hiking experiences. Through knowledge sharing based on previous hiking experiences, the training emphasized thorough preparation for all aspects of a hike. Key areas of focus included understanding weather conditions, anticipating potential injuries, and ensuring proper selection of footwear, clothing and backpacks. The training included a detailed presentation of hiking equipment, to maximize both comfort and safety during the hike, offering practical guidelines for proper preparation and handling unexpected situations.

On the last three days, participants had the opportunity to put their newfound knowledge and experiences into practice. The skills learned on previous days, including preparation techniques, safety protocols, and understanding of high-altitude hiking, were applied as they navigated various trails. Participants faced real-world challenges, such as adapting to changing weather conditions, managing physical and mental stamina, and considering group dynamics. These practical experiences allowed them to refine their abilities, build confidence, and demonstrate their preparedness for safe and effective hiking.

The training offered useful experiences in high-altitude hiking, where participants faced changing weather conditions and diverse terrain, providing them with real-world knowledge of how to adapt to various challenges. A key takeaway from the program was the experience of group hiking, emphasizing the importance of paying attention to others, considering group dynamics, and accommodating varying fitness levels among participants. The training also highlighted the significance of mental and physical preparation for a hike, as well as proper packing for clothing, hydration, and food needs. Participants gained insights into physical fitness and its role in hiking performance. They reported increased confidence in organizing safe hiking activities and promoting hiking safety, feeling better equipped to manage such activities and ensure the well-being of participants.
