Summary

Welcome to Young People in Action, the final mobility in the scope of the Citizenship in Action project. This collaborative initiative, involving five countries, empowers young people through creative tools like photography and videography, promoting their active involvement in societal issues.

So far, this project has conducted two training courses: Active Citizenship Through Photography (in Budapest, Hungary) and Active Citizenship Through Videography (in Brno, Czechia). Now, we are excited to embark on the next phase in Portugal, building on these experiences to further promote youth engagement and active citizenship.

By embarking on Young People in Action, you can expect to develop valuable skills in photography and videography while engaging with a vibrant community from a different culture. This experience will allow you to collaborate with local residents to create various types of content, all while connecting with like-minded young people who share your passions.

Participant Profile

  • Residents or citizens from one of the following countries: Portugal, Romania, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia.

  • Aged between 18 and 24 years old (indicative numbers, not exclusive).

  • Availability to attend the whole program duration and put effort into all the activities.

  • Open-minded, active, and willing to help.

  • Interested to learn more about photography & videography and how to use these tools to promote active citizenship.

  • Motivated to organize or participate in future local activities such as film festivals and photo exhibitions in the scope of the Citizenship In Action project.

  • Willingness to disseminate the activity and its results to other groups of young people.

  • Currently not receiving any funds from the European Union (e.g.: participating in an Erasmus exchange program within University).

Location and Venue

Participants will be accommodated at Peniche Surf Camp, just a few meters from the beach. This inspiring setting will provide an excellent opportunity to connect with the local community and explore the rich culture of Peniche. The camp features common areas, including a kitchen, a room for group activities, and a balcony where participants can relax and socialize. We will sleep in shared rooms of 3-4 people, organized in a gender-segregated manner.

Activity Schedule

  • Day 1: Team Building & Introduction to Active Citizenship

    Participants will get to know each other through teambuilding activities, learn about the Youthpass, Erasmus+ program, and explore local active citizenship campaigns. The day will end with an initial reflection on the project’s goals.

  • Day 2: Guerrilla Filmmaking

    The group will dive into the basics of filmmaking, with a focus on storytelling and creative video production techniques. Through teamwork, participants will film and edit short projects to be screened later.

  • Day 3: Pinhole Photography & Community Exploration

    Participants will learn the art of pinhole photography and use this technique to capture images that reflect local realities. The activity encourages a deeper understanding of the community and promotes alternative forms of active citizenship through photography.

  • Day 4-6: Group Project Work – Photography or Videography

    Between these days, participants will work in groups, focusing on either photography or videography. They will create projects that address ongoing needs in their communities from an international perspective, using visual storytelling to promote active citizenship. The projects will culminate in a final exhibition and movie screening, showcasing the participants’ work.

  • Day 7: Closing Activities & Future Planning

    The final day will focus on wrapping up the activity and planning future actions. Participants will collaborate to design a dissemination plan to enhance the impact of their projects. They will also discuss organizing future local events, such as film festivals or photo exhibitions, to present their work and engage with other young people and the local community. The day will conclude with a reflection on the skills and competencies gained during the activity, and participants will receive their Youthpass certificates in recognition of their efforts.

Useful information

  • Participation costs: There are no participation costs. Travel, accommodation, and food are co-funded by the Erasmus+ program of the European Union. However, to avoid last-minute cancelations, participants who are selected will need to pay a 50€ deposit to confirm their participation. This is to avoid last-minute cancelations and to cover possible damages caused by the participants on the accommodation. The money is sent back after the activity.

  • Health & Insurance: We do not organize insurance for our participants. If they wish to have coverage, participants must arrange insurance for themselves. However, we ask all participants to bring their European Health Insurance Cards, which can be used if they need hospital care.

  • What to bring: Identification card or passport, towel, laptop (optional), camera (optional), pocket money to buy personal items, national food for the cultural night, comfort and enough clothes for the days of the activity based on for the weather forecast.

  • Note: Selected participants will be contacted by email. Once notified, participants will have 24 hours to confirm their participation by paying the confirmation deposit and providing additional information. Please keep an eye on your email, including your spam folder, after applying to ensure you don’t miss any important updates.

Travel

Information for non-Portuguese participants:

  • The non-Portuguese participants will travel mainly by plane.
  • All the plane tickets will be bought by our organization.
  • The booked flight fare is the most basic, including only one small backpack that fits under the plane seats.
  • There are no guarantees that all national groups will travel using their closest airport. Some nationalities might use an airport from a neighboring country to travel.
  • The official traveling days for this activity are the 20th and the 28th of November. However, a few participants might need to start traveling one day before, or they might arrive home one day later. Participants who are not available during the 19th or the 29th of November should mention it in their applications.
  • If participants need to buy bus or train tickets on their own to reach the city of their departure airport, they should inform the project coordinators in advance to check if the itinerary is eligible for reimbursement.
  • After landing in Portugal, the foreign participants will travel to the project accommodation in Peniche by bus. This trip will also be arranged by our organization.

Information for Portuguese participants:

  • Portuguese participants can travel to Peniche either by shared car transportation or by bus.
  • They should only arrive at the accommodation by the end of the day.

Once all participants are selected and confirm their participation, the project coordinators will work together with the national group leaders to develop a final travel itinerary for each national group.
